Hallikar Cow. The Cow of Karnataka

The breed is also known as “Mysore” and is regarded as the best draught breed in Southern India. Karnataka’s Mysore, Mandya, Bangalore, Kolar, Tumkur, Hassan, and Chitradurga districts make up the breeding tract. The color ranges from white to light grey.

The shoulder and hindquarters of young mating bulls exhibit black hues. From the apex of the poll, the horns emerge close to each other and are carried straight upward and backward for almost half their length before orienting slightly forward and inward with pointed tips. There are additional white marks or uneven patches around the eyes, cheeks, neck, and shoulder area.

Professional breeders keep the animals under a semi-intensive management manner. Finger millet, grass, sorghum, and pearl millet are the most common green fodder crops. The average milk output per lactation is 542 kg, with the range being 227-1134 kg with average milk fat of 5.7%.
